The Viewer in a Twentieth Century Art Environment

This series of seminars, held in the Marble Palace, give participants a unique opportunity to become directly acquainted with twentieth century artworks from the State Russian Museum's Ludwig Collection.

In 2000-2001 there will be four thematic series of seminars.
Sessions will last 1.5 to 2 hours.
«The viewer in the 20th century art environment» is designed for students and postgraduates, as well as for anyone who has an interest in 20th-century art. This seminar has been organized by the PRO ARTE Institute in partnership with the State Russian Museum.

Each session will include:

  • An opportunity to get to know at first hand works of art from the Russian Museum's collections of modern art (which are unique in Russia), including the Ludwig Museum at the Marble Palace, the archives of the Department of Latest Tendencies at the Russian Museum itself, and various temporary exhibitions. Tours will be accompanied by commentaries by art historians.

  • A free discussion designed to develop in those who attend the seminar, capacities for perception, evaluation, and discussion of modern art.

  • Each session will be accompanied by a special thematic exhibition.

Sessions will be led by Ye.N. Petrova (Deputy Academic Director of the State Russian Museum) and Ye.Yu. Andreeva, V.N. Belyaeva, A.D. Borovsky, M.Yu. German, N. Zhvitiashvili, I.N. Karasik, M.A. Kostrits, and O.V. Turkina of the Department of Latest Tendencies.

  • Sots-art and socialist realism in 20th-century art

  • Conceptualism: an influential movement in 20th-century art

  • The museum as representation. 20th-century art: «Russia — the West»
