Art History

The Art History Program, which consists of lectures, seminars and tailored, specialized courses, is designed for those interested in the professional study and promotion of twentieth century art and anyone who has a general interest in contemporary art.

«Issues involved in analysis and criticism of contemporary art» (a series of lectures held at the Nevskya krutina in the Peter and Paul Fortress)

Lectures will be given both by art historians and art critics who are already established on the St Petersburg art scene and by young professionals recently embarked on their careers.

In 2000-2001 the following topics will be offered to students:

  • Images of woman in 20th-century art. The Stalinist age. A.A. Bobrikov

  • The group «Kollektivnye deystviya» («Collective actions»). Ye.A. Bobrinskaya

  • «The grand style» and problems of form in monumental sculpture of the end of the 20th century: Zurab Tsereteli. G.Yu.Yershov

  • The new Orthodox spirituality in contemporary art. Ya.P. Klyukanov

  • Stalinist architecture and the Soviet way of life of the 1930s to 1950s in the USSR. S.O. Kuznetsov

  • On the question of a special Leningrad style in art: 1960s to 1970s. D.A. Lanin

  • The monument as the epitaph to a genre: Poirier. A.C. Leporc

  • Antiques and contemporary culture. L.V. Lyakhova

  • Contemporary art and infantile sexuality. V. A. Mazin

  • Paths to the neurointerface: media-art in St Petersburg. A.D. Mitrofanova

  • Form, content, functions. Towards an analysis of the Pompidou Centre in Paris. D.Yu. Ozerkov.

  • English pop art. A.V. Rykov.

  • On criticism of postmodernism: Roberto Venturi and contemporary architectural theory. I.D. Sablin

  • Problems involved in constructing the history of non-official art in the USSR. S.A. Savitsky

  • Forerunners of pop art. M.A. Chernyshova.
