The Alternative History of the Cinema

Coordinator: Svetlana Ostrova (ostrova@proarte.spb.ru)
Authors/compilers: Mikhail Brashinskii, Mikhail Trofimenkov.

An alternative look at the history of cinema, a side view, not from the mainstream but from the marginal, focused not on the mainstream but on everything else. The «Other»; though less popular; no less important cinema, which has long since become mature.

The crisis of modernism brought about an urgent reassessment of priorities and authorities. The crisis of postmodernism is unavoidable, but work has not yet begun, neither in cinematic literature, nor in the renting practices of festivals and cinema museums. The cycle of programs

«The Alternative History of Cinema» does not claim to fill the vacuum, but instead presents several «Other» views of various aspects (tendencies, casting, themes) of world cinematic art.

In 2000/2001 the following programs are planned: «Masterpieces of “Bad” Cinema» (Classics of cult cinema; films which are so bad, that they are not only better than average films, but also outshine many good films), «Men in Skirts» (The theme of sexual transgression, especially relevant in this epoch of mutating identities), «Gods and Monsters» (The motif of artificial creation from Golem to Modem) and «Filling the roll of Sex» (variations of «erotic» as opposed to «pornographic» fantasy - only children under three years will not be admitted).
